Aeromonas salmonicida has been recognized as a serious pathogen of salmon for over 100 years due to its devastating impact on wild and cultivated salmon and its wide distribution. Classical furunculosis derives its name from the boil-like lesions (furuncules), appearing on the skin and in the musculature of infected fish. This disease infects salmon species worldwide, with both typical and atypical strains causing disease.
