 Trout - Vibriosis

- Vibriosis is a bacterial disease affecting many different species of fish living in sea water, brackish water and in some instances, fresh water.
- The disease is caused by the bacterium Vibrio anguillarum and results in significant losses of all salmonids, including cultured trout
- Vibriosis is a stress-related disease and is associated with a number of factors e.g. high water temperatures, rapid fluctuations in water temperature or salinity, over-crowding, buffeting by wave action and poor water quality including low oxygen levels and high suspended solids
- Vibriosis has a global distribution with epizootics on all continents and in a wide range of fish species
- There also appears to be a seasonal effect of the disease, outbreaks occurring mainly in spring and autumn, though this may simply reflect rapid changes of temperature and salinity
