 Aquaflor*

Description: 50% w/w medicated premix for inclusion into fish feed
Active Ingredient: Florfenicol, 500mg/g
Formulation: 50% florfenicol/50% inert ingredients
Pharmacologic Properties: Florfenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria isolated from domestic animals. Florfenicol is both a bacteriostatic and a bactericidal antibiotic. Its activity is due to the inhibition of protein synthesis and results from the binding of bacterial ribosomes in such a way as to prevent ongoing translation of mRNA into protein. In vitro studies have shown florfenicol to have a broad spectrum of activity which includes aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, which are either Gram-positive or Gram-negative. Aeromonas salmonicida has been shown to be sensitive to florfenicol concentrations of 1.6 g or less and Edwardsiella ictaluri has a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of <= 0.25 g/ml. Target Species: Salmonids
Key Benefits:
- Administered in feed when fish feeding rates are from 0.2 - 5.0% biomass/day
- Highly palatable
- Well tolerated by fish
- Effective against a range of bacterial diseases
- Effective in fresh and salt water
- Different mode of action vs. other antibiotics used in aquaculture, therefore likely to be effective against multiple antibiotic resistant bacteria

Please check your local package insert or contact your local Schering-Plough Animal Health representative for more details. Dosage and Administration: Aquaflor* is mixed into the fish feed at a rate sufficient to deliver 10-mg florfenicol per kilogram bodyweight.
- mix Aquaflor* into unmedicated feed prior to pelleting, or use to surface-coat pelleted feed
- recommended dosage is 10 mg florfenicol per kg body weight per day (10 mg/kg/day) for 10 consecutive days
- suggested feeding rate for medicated feed is 0.5% of total weight of fish per rearing area

During the preparation of medicated feed, Aquaflor is either coated onto the surface of the pellet ("top dress") or incorporated into the feed ingredient mash prior to extrusion or pelleting. Affected fish should receive Aquaflor medicated feed daily for 10 consecutive days. Top-dressing can be undertaken at either a feed mill or on a fish farm using a mixer.
